The French (even the less young) always more addicted to the digital devices

mobile Phones, tablets, internet boxes... A study of the Insee made the point on these facilities possessed by the French. Here are the 5 characteristic points that we can draw from it...

■ 84% of households have Internet access by 2017

More than eight French households out of ten have an internet connection. In 2004, this rate was only 31%. It is almost three times more. However, the rural areas remain relatively less well equipped than cities and great disparities between the rich (93%) and the poor (73%). This inequality of resources is also visible in the number of computers or phones by households, although access to these electronic devices has greatly democratized since its inception.

■ 37% of families have a computer fixed

In 2011, nearly half of the French population owned a computer fixed. However, following the development of portable computers in the year 2000, the fixed are left behind by the French and see their rates dip to 37%. This is not a surprise, the buyers prefer tools lightweight and nomadic. Thus, in 2017, the laptops were equipped with 62% of the households, and 4 households out of 10 have a tablet.

■ 96% of households have a television

Almost the totality of the French population owns a television. Unlike phones and computers, this number has remained relatively stable since the 1990s. However, it is in decline among young people who watch more on the Internet. In addition, the presence of DVD players or vcrs has greatly decreased between 2007 and 2017, from 85% to 66%. As for the services of platforms such as Netflix and OCS, they are on the rise with 18% of users but can be viewed on other devices.

■ 74% of those over 75 years are equipped with a mobile phone

The equipment in the mobile phone of the elderly has been late (as for computers and the Internet), but fast. Their number tripled between 2004 and 2017 to reach three-quarters. Conversely, the rate of electronic equipment for younger children, who already have everything they need, is stagnant. All in all, the quasi-totality of the population (99%) is available by telephone in 2018, either a fixed or a mobile phone.

■ 13% of the French do not get ever fixed phone

Some French win ever over the phone (13%). In addition, more than half of the population never picks up as if she knows the number displayed. The people that filter the calls have common characteristics. They have mostly not been studied and are from small towns or rural areas.
