Mom charged with aggravated assault on police

A North Catasauqua woman is accused of assaulting officers who police said were called to her home.

Charged is Janice Kovacs, 46, of the 1100 block of Fourth Street.

North Catasauqua police on Jan. 18 responded to the home following a 911 call from someone reporting her 13-year-old brother was "out of control," assaulting her mother and destroying the home.

When an officer rang the bell and knocked on the door, Kovacs allegedly yelled, "No one called you." At some point, the door opened slightly and the officer tried to wedge his way inside, but Kovacs repeatedly slammed the door, police said.

The door was slammed on the officer's foot, according to police.

Another officer responded as backup and both managed to force their way inside. The teenage boy allegedly began pushing and swinging at one of the officers, knocking a flashlight out of his hand. Kovacs grabbed the flashlight when one of the officers went to retrieve it, according to police.

When one of the officers held the boy, Kovacs allegedly jumped on his back, causing him to fall into a staircase, which allowed the boy to run into the kitchen. Another officer grabbed Kovacs of the other's back and pushed her into the living room.

Kovacs is charged with aggravated assault. She was arraigned Sunday before District Judge Patricia Broscius, who set bail at $1,000 unsecured.

When reached at home Tuesday, Kovacs disputed the police account and called the incident a "misunderstanding."
