Deputies received a call about a suicidal person in Winter Haven who fled in a pickup southbound on U.S. 27 when approached, the Sheriff's Office said.

After the driver fled, he intentionally slammed into two vehicles between Cypress Gardens Boulevard and Thompson Nursery Road between Winter Haven and Lake Wales, deputies said. At least one person was hospitalized from those collisions.

When a deputy who is an agency instructor for the precision immobilization technique (PIT) utilized the maneuver, the pickup left the roadway and began to roll, deputies said.

The pickup's driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle, deputies said.

He was pronounced dead at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, deputies said.

The Sheriff's Office has not yet identified the man.
