The actor Hans-Michael Rehberg is dead. As Munich Residenz Theater reported, he died already on Tuesday morning at age of 79 years in Berlin. Rehberg was born 1938 in Royal Forest near Berlin. In Essen he completed his acting training. His career began on United Urban stage in Krefeld-Mönchengladbach, n from 1963 to 1972 he went to Bavarian State Theatre in Munich.

He was known to a wide audience by his comedic roles on television. From 2003 he played Bishop Hemmelrath in ARD series Pastor Braun. 2004 he was seen in successful cinema Comedy (T) Starship Surprise. Rehberg could not only be funny: With films of Deathmaker, Schindler's List or men, he was also successful in serious subject.

Rehberg was also active as a director. He was awarded several times for his work. Thus he was honored 1994 with Austrian Kainz Medal for portrayal of Mendel Krik at sunset of Isaac Babel in Vienna Academy Theater. 1999 he received Gertrud-Eysoldt-ring as Best actor for sold grandfar of Franz Xaver Kroetz at Munich Folk Theatre.

The Salzburg Festival responded to news of death of Rehbergs. Since his first appearance as Cassius in Peter Stein's Julius Caesar 1992, Rehberg 166 times have stood on stages of festival. "He was one of great German artists of his generation," he said in a press release.
