Robert Koch Institute: More than 1,600 people died of flu

In past flu season, re are unusually many people suffering from viral flu in Germany. The Working Group influenza (AGI) of Robert Koch Institute presented a recent report on this.

Between end of December 2017 and beginning of April 2018, a disease with influenza viruses was detected at 333,567 persons. The fact that real number of patients is presumably higher, has two main reasons: not every flu-affected search is a doctor or a physician. And not every practice will allow pathogen samples to be examined in laboratory.

The number of deaths from influenza was also unusually high this winter: at least 1,665 people died from infectious disease. According to AGI, 87 percent of se were over 60 years old. In addition, pre-existing diseases were often detected. The actual death tolls could also be higher in reality, as influenza pathogens did not always show up after death.

145 times, according to AGI's information, flu broke out in hospitals last season, 144 outbreaks have been registered in kindergartens, 58 in schools and 51 in retirement or nursing homes.

In 15 weeks of flu, viruses of genus influenza B had been detected in two-thirds of cases. Influenza pathogens are divided into types A, B and C.
