Sunday opening: No shopping spree on Christmas Eve

Because Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday, Ver. Di calls for a boycott. Consumers should prefer to shop at times that are acceptable to sellers.

Sunday opening: No shopping spree on Christmas Eve

The Ver. Di trade union has called for a purchase waiver on Christmas Eve. Although 24.12. This year falls on a Sunday, some retailers are considering opening ir shop doors. "Incredibly cynical" is that, said Ver. di-Federal vorstandsmitglied Stefanie using Berger of news agency DPA. After all, sellers wanted to "prepare mselves for Christmas and celebrate toger with ir families" like everyone else.

Sellers cannot defend mselves

The workers mselves would have no way of defending mselves against Sunday service, said Ver. di. This is why y call for abandonment of last-minute Christmas shopping on Holy Eve.  Instead, consumers should buy at times that are also humane for employees in trade. The Service trade union ver. Di had in recent years conducted numerous procedures against municipal permits for open Sundays.

Shop Opening times are country thing. For example, in North Rhine-Westphalia, a temporary opening is permitted for shops selling mainly food and beverage products. In total, however, most businesses remain, estimates trade association Nordrhein-Westfalen. Only about 20 percent are expected to make use of Sunday opening times.

Large chains like Aldi have already conceded to stay closed at 24.12. Of more than 5,000 supermarkets of Rewe and penny chains, only so-called branch markets remained completely closed. The approximately 1,200 self-employed merchants in Rewe network can decide for mselves. "There are some who want to open up," said a Rewe spokesman for DPA. The market leader Edeka is same: branches are managed by self-employed merchants, who decide independently about ir opening hours. Lidl didn't want to give any details yet.
