Twenty-eight hours of work are enough

The fact that even a trade union like IG Metall now calls for more flexible working hours shows: the Eternal Vollzeitbesch ä employment has served.

Twenty-eight hours of work are enough

From trade unions, audience is accustomed to clamoring for higher wages. At least two circumstances, however, unions have been costing members for some time. On one, y often make less of ir wage demands than economic situation of Germany would allow. On or, y are bracing mselves for better payment, which is why workers felt badly represented with or concerns.

So it is remarkable what board of IG Metall proposes for upcoming fare round. Of course, he also calls for six percent more wages, which he should put in a larger part because of economic boom this time. Above all, however, four million workers in industry should be able to reduce ir working time to 28 hours-and later increase m again. This is nerve of a society that has been adopted by fact that fars are going to work and mors are reduced to b jobs without a prospect of career and decent pension. For trade unions, such ideas could begin a modernisation that strengns m as employee representation. However, flexibility needs to be implemented properly.

Surveys clearly convey what Germans want. Most full-time employees want to work at least for a while shorter than average of 40 hours today. The reasons are manifold. They want to take care of ir children, ors to parents who are increasingly in need of care. Some want to acquire new knowledge for rapidly digitizing professional world. and ors simply feel exhausted from work that has been condensed for years.

None of se motifs can be disliked as personal luxuries. Ignoring m threatens not only individual's damage, but also society. But those who want to temporarily kürzertreten, often encounter problems in company. Eir part-time is excluded in certain places. Or person concerned must decide on a permanent part-time-and risks professional and financial offside. The system is too rigid. This is demonstrated by fact that not only majority of full-time employees want to be shorter, but also that every third Teilzeitler wants to work longer-but not allowed.

Whoever is to be constantly reachable must also be allowed to demand

Employees deserve more flexibility. This principle is a long way to ask companies for ir interests. Already 40 percent of employees work on weekends. As many are expected to be reachable after evening. Modern technology reinforces this trend. Employers should also give ir employees flexibility y require.

For such a deal, however, re are conditions in global competitive world. Companies need predictability so that company does not suffer. Workers would have to decide in advance and for a long time how many hours y are working. It will also be more manageable for company if employees are open to new tasks when switching between full and part-time. Moreover, it must not be too expensive. IG Metall is wrong if it expects companies to compensate for majority of wage shortfall, which means 28 hours.

It is true that workers are fulfilling a social task, for instance because of ir children kürzertreten. However, costs should be borne by whole of society, as in SPD's 30-hour working model. In any case, politics as a whole is responsible: so that workers in those sectors can also work more flexibly, in which much fewer workers are organised than in metal sector.
