Unemployment: more active, less self-employed

In Germany, as many people are employed as they have been since reunification. New jobs have been created, particularly in the services sector.

Unemployment: more active, less self-employed

The number of people working in Germany has risen as strongly last year as it has not been for ten years. In 2017, Federal Statistical Office divided it by 638,000 or 1.5 per cent to 44.3 million. This is highest value since reunification. Lastly, a similar increase was recorded in year 2007.

According to data, many new social security agencies have been created. In contrast, Federal office divided number of marginal employees. The number of self-employed also fell by 26,000 to 4.3 million.

"This has been a dynamic continuation of sustained increase in employment for twelve years," Federal Statistical Office's communication States. A higher labour force participation of domestic population and immigration of foreign workers would have offset negative demographic effects such as an overall shrinking and ageing population.

The reason for this positive development is continuing economic upturn in Germany. The gross domestic product grew 2017 in eighth consecutive year. For 2018, Munich Ifo Institute expects a furr increase in number of employees to almost 44.8 million. 2019, re should be almost 45.2 million workers.

Largest increase in service sector

Most of new jobs were created in 2017 in services sector. Here, number of employees increased by 1.7 percent. The public service, education, health sector recorded an increase of 2.0 percent or 214,000 in workforce. In case of business service providers, re was an increase of 146,000 or 2.5 percent, in trade, transport, hospitality sector of 111,000 or 1.1 percent.

In manufacturing sector too, number of employees increased by 61,000 or 0.8 percent. In construction, it rose by 43,000 or 1.8 percent. The jobs in agriculture, forestry and fisheries decreased by a value of 2,000 or 0.3 per cent.

The number of unemployed has decreased in last year according to provisional statistics to figure of 1.7 million people. This corresponds to a share of 3.7 percent in working population.
