US election campaign: Facebook wants to verify election advertising by postcard

Facebook wants to prevent a new influence of US election from abroad this year analogously. According to information by Katie Harbath, who is responsible for political content on Facebook, anyone who wants to publish political advertising on Facebook will soon receive a postcard with a code. This code must n be activated to turn on an ad.

As Harbath said at a conference of National Association of Secretaries of state, Facebook wants to make sure that clients actually have an address in USA. Accordingly, new rules are to be applied to all advertisements in which a candidate is named.

Harbath stressed that measure was only part of a large-scale initiative to avoid influencing elections from abroad. When asked how Facebook wants to prevent foreign agents from simply securing addresses in United States and picking up mail re, including through intermediaries, she did not enter.

According to U.S. investigators, Russian internet trolls, among ors, used Facebook ads, invented profiles, and groups to influence U.S. presidential election 2016. This autumn, interim elections are in which members of House of Representatives and some of Senators must face a re-election.
