That's how artist Kevin Grass describes himself in his Twitter bio, and admittedly, it is hard to tell sometimes when looking at his photorealistic paintings. Grass, who lives in Tarpon Springs, was recently named Artist of the Year by Redwood Media, which runs art shows across the U.S., including Spectrum Miami.

His surrealist figure paintings include Black Friday, depicting a stampede of customers into a modern Walmart, modeled after after Theodore Gericault's 1819 "Raft of the Medusa." Grass, who teaches art at St. Petersburg College, diagrams the symbolism in that painting and others on his website.

Here are three paintings inspired directly by spots around Tampa Bay.

Downtown Dunedin

Primates, depicting a scene at the Busch Gardens gorilla enclosure.

The Sponge Docks, depicting the sponge docks in Tarpon Springs
