‘Hellboy 3’ Movie Update: Guillermo Del Toro Gives Final Update On The Trilogy’s Conclusion

“Hellboy” fans are going to have to be satisfied with the first two films. While the filmmaking team wanted a trilogy, director Guillermo del Toro revealed that “Hellboy 3” has officially been scrapped.

Del Toro wrote and directed both 2004’s “Hellboy” and 2008’s “Hellboy II: The Golden Army.” He made it clear that he wanted to  make a third movie, but it seems talks of one more movie have fallen through. He went on Twitter to tell fans that the “Hellboy 3” isn’t going to come together, and “that is to be the final thing about it.”

“Hellboy” follows a demonic beast, played by Ron Pearlman, who is actually a hero. Hellboy works with the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense to keep the earth safe from supernatural threats. The movie is based on Dark Horse Comics’ superhero of the same name.

The 2004 movie wasn’t the massive hit that Universal Pictures was hoping for. DVD sales, however, were fantastic, so a sequel was greenlighted. After underperforming in theaters and in home release, a third movie was never made.

Pearlman said that del Toro always planned to tell the story through three films. “We were designed to be a trilogy, with a beginning, a middle and an end. We’ve only done two-thirds, so I feel that we’re not really done until we finish it,” the actor told Empire in 2015.

Fans’ hopes were renewed last month when the “Crimson Peak” director tweeted a poll asking if fans were interested in another movie. With over 132,000 votes, there were certainly people who wanted to see “Hellboy 3” released, but that apparently was not enough to get the movie made.

Despite the sad update, del Toro and Pearlman remain busy. The director has several projects in production, including “Pacific Rim: Uprising” and “The Strain” Season 4. Pearlman appeared in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” last year, and he stars in Amazon’s TV series “Hand of God.” The two reunited last year when Pearlman voiced a character for del Toro’s animated series on Netflix, “Trollhunters.”
