In partnership with Hoboken Family Planning and the Hudson County Cancer Coalition, Secaucus will be offering free cancer screenings for uninsured and under-insured residents.
The screenings will be held Jan. 24 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Senior Center at 101 Center Ave. In the event of inclement weather, the snow date will be Jan. 31.
"A healthy community is always a good community, and it saves the taxpayers money," said Joyce Adams, coordinator for the education and outreach program at the Hudson County Cancer Coalition.
There will also be wellness screening for Medicare B patients -- patients 65 and older.
Certain age and financial restrictions apply: the age for mammograms is 40 to 64 years old - unless there's family history or there are suspicious abnormalities. The age for Pap smears is 18 and older.
The financial restriction is 300 percent of the federal poverty guideline. For a person in a household of three, the poverty line would be an annual income of $20,090; therefore, all screenings will be free for households of three making below $60,000.
"The program is geared towards people who have less money -- to try and make sure we have a healthy community," Adams said.
"Preventative care is so much better than care later on," she added. "If we catch breast cancer in stage 1, the chances of survival are so much greater than if you catch it in stage 4."
The program is funded by the State of New Jersey, Hudson County Community Development Block Grant, and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
