Coroner IDs man killed in oil tank fire as Greeley resident

The Weld County Coroner's office on Saturday identified the man killed in Thursday's oilfield-related fire near the Grand View Estates in Mead as Oscar Lopez Velasquez, 32, of Greeley.

The coroner's office said that information on the manner and cause of his death will be available after laboratory testing is completed, and that may take about 30 days. No further information was to be released until that time, according to a coroner's news release.

Velasquez was killed Thursday when an oil tank battery exploded while workers performed maintenance off Colo. 66 near Colorado Boulevard in Mead. Two others were injured.

The oil tank battery was owned by Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, and it marked the third fatality related to the oil and gas firm since mid-April. A Firestone house explosion on April 17 prompted the company to shut 3,000 wells across the state, leading Gov. John Hickenlooper to order a statewide review of oil and gas operations in the aftermath.
