Six weeks ago, we turned thumbs down on San Rafael’s last-minute plea to delay SMART’s extension to Larkspur, where passengers would be able to catch a ferry across the bay. SMART plans to begin the $48 million construction project this summer and start service to Larkspur next year, but San Rafael officials argued that work on the rail line would cause traffic headaches in and around the Mission City’s transit center. Another, albeit less compelling, argument was that Larkspur isn’t that interested in SMART service anyway.

The extension is back on track after Rep. Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael, intervened. Representatives of several jurisdictions, including Larkspur City Councilman Dan Hilmer, the newest member of SMART’s governing board, agreed to temporarily reconfigure bus traffic to accommodate rail construction and local traffic circulation and to work together on plans for an eventual reconfiguration of the transit center.

That sounds like a win-win deal, and a thumbs up.
