Dresden: remembrance culture is not only the dropping of wreaths

With candles, breastfeeding prayers and a chain of people, Dresden thought of destruction of ir city 73 years ago and reminded of victims of war and fascism. Thousands of citizens came toger to form an approximately four-kilometre-long chain of people around old town. Thus, according to a call by celebrities and mayor of city, inhumanity of war should be remembered and at same time a sign against violence and reconciliation should be set.

Lord Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP) called for an active discussion of history. "Remembrance culture is not only displacement of wreaths, but also in a very special way social education work with a clear reference to present," Hilbert wrote in his speech for Prelude of human chain. The 13th of February will awaken a responsibility "not for past, but very well for what is happening today, tomorrow and day after."

Already on Tuesday morning, people from city of Dresden and politicians gared in numerous memorial places. The main places of remembrance are annen and Heath Cemetery, where numerous deaths of air raids are buried. On Annenfriedhof, small wooden crosses were put into a memorial, where Hilbert also participated. Politicians and politicians settled in Heath Cemetery, including representatives of AfD and NPD. It was also thought of at Altmarkt, where thousands of deaths had been cremated after bombing. Before women's church rebuilt a few years ago at Neumarkt, participating candles were kindled.

In air raids of allied bombers on Dresden on 13 and 14 February 1945, according to estimates by historians about 25,000 people had been killed. Large parts of historic old town were completely destroyed.

Police protection for Lord Mayor

The culture of remembrance has long been a struggle in Dresden. Hilbert had been hostile last year after warning and declaring that Dresden was anything but an innocent city in run-up to Memorial day before a victim myth. After threats against him, he was put under police protection.
