Erkelenz: Demolition of Old church begins despite protests

Despite protests by environmental activists, demolition of Immerar Cadral has begun. On Monday two excavators started rebuilding work on choir of nave. Despite delay, planned time frame of two weeks according to energy company RWE Power is to be observed.

Activists of Greenpeace had been chained to façade of Church of Saint Lambertus in morning and to an excavator, thus halting planned demolition in meantime. By noon, police climbers picked m up from façade and finished action. The church and village of Immerath are in area of lignite mining Garzweiler II, which is operated by RWE Power.

Around church, activists protested with transparent how to stop open-pit! Red Line A61 "and" Whoever destroys culture also destroys people "against lignite mining and preservation of local cultural goods.

Local Pastor Werner Rombach does not reckon, according to his own words, that many Immerar would see demolition of church. Rar, y are mainly strangers. The emotions are no longer as great as Dededication service three years ago, he stressed. The Immerar had largely completed action and looked forward. Neverless, he is pleased that church is now "playing such a role again" with protests.

The church with double tower façade is one of last remnants of Erkelenz-Immerath, a place already largely demolished in North Rhine-Westphalia district of Heinsberg. On October 13th, 2013, last mass was read in St. Lambertus. After ir dededication, Catholic Church was sold to RWE Power. Since 2006, village has been relocated a few kilometres furr to Immerath (neu). Only a few farmers live in old village. In Immerath (new) a chapel called St. Lambertus was built.
