In January, there had been violent conflicts in Cottbus. Now the President and representative of the city met. A next meeting is to be held in June.

After violent clashes between locals and refugees in Cottbus, federal president Frank-Walter Steinmeier received representatives and citizens of city at Schloss Bellevue. He thanked representatives from politics, churches, education, economy and sport for being publicly committed to a good coexistence in city, federal president after meeting. Nothing was known about more concrete details of two-hour conversation.

The participants would have agreed to stay in conversation. Steinmeier announced himself for furr talks in Cottbus. The first visit was scheduled for June.

The mayor of Cottbus, Holger Chalice (CDU), who had publicly asked for more aid at end of January, felt that conversation was open, important and encouraging, said a spokesman for city. The President of Brandenburg Technical University of Cottbus-Senftenberg, Jörg Steinbach, spoke of a very great seriousness and of great interest.

According to his own information, deputy chief executive of Cottbus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK), Maik Bethke, "made it clear that I see causes of insecurity and dissatisfaction of people in structural change in region." Cottbus has been considered extremely indebted for years. Or guests included representatives of FC Energie Cottbus Football Club and Cottbus Human Rights Centre.

Demonstration announced for Saturday

In January, Cottbus had repeatedly been confronted by locals and refugees. Several young Syrians had become violent, and re was a protest against influx of refugees. In addition, attacks from right-wing extremists accumulated on migrants and refugee shelters.

In meantime, police presence has been increased and until furr instructions from country no furr refugees will be distributed from first reception facility to city.
