Iraq: Severe earthquake in Iraq

In the northeast of Iraq there has been an earthquake of magnitude 7.2. Its center was located about 30 kilometers southwest of the town of Halabja near the border with Iran.

A severe earthquake has shaken norastern border region between Iraq and Iran. As US Earthquake observatory USGS, quake reached a strength of 7.2. According to preliminary indications of Geoforschungszentrum Potsdam, earthquakes had even a strength of 7.3.

According to USGS, center of quake was in a mountainous region 32 kilometers southwest of town of Halabja in almost 40 kilometers depth. Halabja is a town in autonomous region of Kurdistan, 57,000 inhabitants. A Kurdish news site reported that earthquake had been felt in numerous Kurdish cities such as Halabja, Erbil and Duhok. In city of Chanakin, 16 people were brought to hospital with injuries; In town of Kore in province of Erbil witnesses of two dead were reported. These figures were not officially confirmed at first.

One Iraqi expert spoke of a quake of magnitude 6.5. The jarring Seienauch in Iraqi capital of Baghdad had been felt. DasZentrum was located about 100 kilometers south of Iraqi StadtAs-Sulajmanija.

In Iranian television, it was said that quake was dispatch Iran. In Iranian border town of Ghassre Shirin, at least two people were killed, re have been 20 injured. Eight localities were beschädigtworden re, in some power was down.
