Long-distance traffic: What travelers should know now

The railway has set up long-distance traffic nationwide, connections have been cancelled at airports, and there have been impairments in long-distance buses. Travellers should be aware of this.

Long-distance traffic: What travelers should know now

For first time since Hurricane Cyril eleven years ago, Deutsche Bahn has completely halted long-distance traffic. Trains did not stop since afternoon for security reasons. The railway pointed out that long-distance trains that were still on road should go as far as possible to destination station. The lock remains at least until closing date, company said. "However, we also expect nationwide impairments on Friday," said a train spokeswoman on Thursday afternoons online. Regional trains also fell in many regions.

Trains, taxi and hotel vouchers by train

For stranded train passengers, company provided so-called residence trains in some stations. In trains with sleeping cars, passengers can warm up and sleep if necessary, spokeswoman said. Hot drinks were distributed at some stations. In DB travel centres affected travellers could also get Hotel voucher s. Those who still had to travel today could also request a taxi voucher .

The railway announced that it would compensate all affected customers. As with previous storms, tickets for failed connections should remain valid until one week after end of incident, spokeswoman said. "Customers can easily get on train with ir tickets." This also applies to savings tickets, which are usually tied to a certain journey.

Online booked tickets and seat reservations could be rebooked online or refunded free of charge. The railway wanted to inform on its websites and on Twitter about furr development of disturbances in long-distance and regional traffic. (this website informs railways about long-haul failures, on this website about developments in regional traffic. Here customers can cancel or exchange ir online tickets.)

Hardly any failures in long-distance buses

At first re were no major failures in bus traffic. At biggest provider in Germany, Flixbus, re were only isolated disturbances, said a spokeswoman time online. The buses would have to adjust ir speed in part, and in whole federal territory re were traffic impediments due to storm. The buses are partly delayed, but re are hardly any failures.

Flights have been cancelled

Flights were cancelled at several German airports because, for example, arrivals from Nerlands failed due to storm. The airport Cologne/Bonn interrupted operation at noon for about an hour and a half, re were no more takeoffs and landings. According to operator, several flights were cancelled at Düsseldorf airport. Several connections were made at Berlin airports because machines from West Germany and Nerlands could not start.

Eurowings and Lufthansa asked ir customers to check status of flights for safety. (Check your Eurowings flight here and your Lufthansa flight here.)
