Advertising ban for abortion: it's time to end the ideological debate

In the dispute over the ban on advertising for abortion, the union and the SPD should disarm. There is a sensible compromise proposal.

Advertising ban for abortion: it's time to end the ideological debate

To penetrate a Gordian knot can sometimes be quite simple. In dispute over an advertising ban for abortion, Federal Medical Association has now been pretending. It has proposed to establish an Internet portal for this purpose, which is operated by an independent institution and secured by a legal mandate. On website, women find all information y need about abortion, including addresses of doctors who make se interventions.

In fact, this is a sensible approach to resolve dispute over paragraph 219 a penal code that has been burdening Government alliance of Union and SPD for weeks. The information needs of women who are concerned about abortion would be fully taken into account, and doctors could inform m that y are doing abortions without prosecution.

For under penalty, paragraph 219 A only provides that someone "offers", "announces" or "praises" abortions "for sake of his wealth." A doctor may not be person who will pass on this information because he deserves to be aborted as well as all or medical services. In his place, however, informs a neutral institution about this possibility, re are no legal difficulties.

The doctors should like that

All doctors who do not really care about advertising, but only about information, should actually agree. For women in turn, this would be a way to inform mselves quickly and neutrally – even before turning to a counselling centre whose visit would remain mandatory. There, except in Bavaria, you will get addresses of doctors who are doing abortions. However, a simple internet search is not enough at present.

Union and SPD would do well to get involved in this clever proposal. It is a debate that is ideologically charged by both sides. At present, SPD likes to pretend that, without a reform of paragraph 219 A, right of self-determination for women is questionable. In any case, it threatens to vote with or groups and against Union for abolition, which would be tantamount to a coalition break.

The Union, in turn, gives impression that if status quo were changed, it would be feared that abortion would become routine. Both are inappropriate and do not help to solve actual problem. It's time to disarm.

To agree to proposal of Federal Medical Association, SPD will have to jump a little more over its shadow than Union. After all, Social Democrats originally wanted to delete 219a, while union wants to leave it intact. But, on closer scrutiny, SPD should have little reason to refuse this solution.

In end, winners would be women who were faced with a very difficult decision of conscience and would n come across comprehensive and factual information on subject of abortion when y first Googled.
