Hardly anyone talks about the fact that after 150 years the SPD is in the process of making a woman the boss for the first time. Least the SPD itself. What does that tell us?

The fact that a spell is inherent in this beginning cannot exactly be said of Andrea Nahles ' Verpatzter appointment as SPD chief. Should party make it chairman at end of April, this is provisional culmination of a long political career – at age of 18 Nahles joined SPD, in book she gave "housewife or chancellor" as a career goal. But this beginning threatens to be obscured – from chaos that prevails in party, from members ' vote on coalition with CDU.

However historically this step would be, it must be said, despite turmoil of past few days: Over 150 years, this is itself a progressively understanding party old, but until today it was led exclusively by men. Since party was founded by Ferdinand Lassalle – just before phone was invented – until dreary days of Beck, Muentefering and Gabriel: Power was passed on to men in SPD by men. It resembled a law of nature.

The writer lives in Berlin. Her first novel No one was published in year 2017 in Wallstein Verlag.

The last one in this series was Martin Schulz. He is now likely to follow 47-year-old former Labour and social minister. Last but not least, after a good three weeks ' time at party congress, with a loud, rar short but very emotional speech, comrades to a close agreement with coalition negotiations, one should say: had been coerced.

The scenarios are similar: Nahles held an almost eight-minute speech, which only superficially strengned Martin Schulz. Angela Merkel wrote in year 1999, still as secretary general of CDU, an article in FAZ, in which she demanded an emancipation of party of Helmut Kohl. When she took over chairmanship of Wolfgang Schäuble, party was in a similar crisis as SPD today because of his donation affair. In this situation, Merkel handed a powerful gesture to assert herself against helpless, male aspirant, Merz, Koch and Stoiber. By way she was only two years younger than Andrea Nahles today. The former Juso chairman Nahles himself held her first Bundestag mandate at that time.

Women come to train when men no longer know

Since n, almost 20 years and countless Feminismusdebatten have passed, but still applies to SPD, which was also true for CDU at time: women do not seem to aspire to openly in se parties, y rarely go out of a competitive struggle with men as Winners. Power must fall into your lap like a helpless child. Women often come to train when men no longer know. Women may only be savior, and y should never be shaken by bars of chancellor's office like Gerhard Schroeder. So stay, power back or forth, old gender stereotypes continue to live.

As Nahles ever, in year 2005, that was won in a fight vote against Kajo Wasserhövel favored by n SPD chief Franz Muentefering and was subsequently proposed as a new secretary general, threw muentefering out of protest. Nahles waived office. At that time she was called "Münte murderer" or "King's Murderer", from party y were accused of stupidity and selfishness and wrote picture, maybe y just need a man again. This episode, now in retrospect almost to a humorous anecdote, reminds us, as Angela Merkel also saw herself in Bundestag election campaign 2002 against her will still forced to leave Edmund Stoiber as top candidate. Stoiber was defeated by Gerhard Schroeder, who in turn had to give up Angela Merkel three years later.
