Bundestag Presidium: Oppermann meets Schäuble and Roth

With Thomas Oppermann the SPD candidate for the Bundestag Presidium is fixed. The choice of the other candidates is considered safe, except for those of the AfD man.

Bundestag Presidium: Oppermann meets Schäuble and Roth

Before constituent meeting of new Bundestag this Tuesday, candidates of parties will be held for Bureau of Parliament. It is known that as new Bundestag president, former federal finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU) is set. There is no doubt about his choice. He should have six deputies from all political groups, but candidate for AfD is controversial.

The former Socialist Group leader, Thomas Oppermann, is desired candidate of SPD leadership, but had to prevail against intra-party resistance. During nomination on Monday evening in SPD Bundestag group, Oppermann received only about 61 percent. Previously, his competitors – previous Bundestag vice Ulla Schmidt and former parliamentary managing Director Christine Lambrecht – had withdrawn ir candidacies. Oppermann was SPD Bundestag group leader in last legislature, but had to give this office to Andrea Nahles in course of SPD's redeployment. The 63-year-old jurist was previously a minister of science in Lower Saxony and parliamentary director of SPD Bundestag group. He has been sitting in Bundestag since 2005.

The CSU politician Hans-Peter Friedrich is to represent Union group in Bundestag Presidium. The former group vice-President of Union was in a runoff in CSU country group against former head of national group Peter Ramsauer. The 60-year-old jurist was from 2011 to 2013 Federal minister, after election four years ago a short time agriculture minister. But n he resigned against background of children's pornography affair with former SPD politician Sebastian Edathy, because he had yet to inform n SPD chief Sigmar Gabriel about investigations. After that, it became quieter around CSU politician.

The FDP Vice Wolfgang Kubick is apparently nominated only on demand by his group. If it comes to a Jamaica coalition, Kubicki is in conversation as a minister. The 65-year-old is regarded as a friend of open words and is probably best-known FDP politician alongside party and Bundestag group leader Christian Lindner. The native Braunschweiger made a political career primarily in Schleswig-Holstein, where he played a decisive role in forming a Jamaica coalition from CDU, FDP and greens after Landtag election in Kiel.

The green politician Claudia Roth is to hold office of Vice-President for second time. At ir first election four years ago, re was already a long party career with highs and lows behind 62-year-olds. In years 2001 and 2002, she was a party chairman for a short time, after which she stood again from 2004 to 2013 at Green Peak. She moved to Bundestag in 1998 for first time. With clear announcements from contentious politician, AfD members will probably have to reckon in next four years.

The left-wing MEP Petra Pau has been 2006 Bundestag vice. At that time, however, it only came into office as a second choice. The Left party, who was still a PDS in Bundestag, had first nominated n and now deceased party chief Lothar Bisky, who failed in four electoral rounds. The members of House were finally able to communicate to 54-year-old Pau. Since 1998, she has secured direct mandate in her Berlin electoral district.

The AfD politician Albrecht Glaser is most controversial candidate for Bundestag presidium. Wher he is actually elected is very questionable. There are great opposition to him, among or things, for statements in which he disagreed on freedom of religion for Muslims. Glaser was a CDU member for decades, but belonged to founders of right-wing populist AfD in 2013. The 75-year-old acted primarily in local politics, from 1995 to 2002 he was city councillor and Town Chamberlain in Frankfurt am Main.
