Green Start Convention: Departure to the fourth phase

At a convention in Berlin, the Greens are looking for answers for the future. The aim is also to shake off old taboos. For example, when dealing with genetic engineering.

The Western Harbour Center in Berlin has a party atmosphere on Friday afternoon. Through old industrial building, from whose high windows one looks at water and old warehouse buildings, hip rock music echoes. The high ceiling glows green and pink. But approximately 600 green moving people who have come toger must wait a little while celebrating.

For in middle of hall are now two still quite new Greens chairman Annalena Baerbock and Robert Habeck. And y made a lot of things. "It has never been so urgent to save world," Baerbock calls listeners. "Let us save Our world again." You can't go to beer that fast.

For two days, Greens took time to get to bottom of weekend. After start on Friday, y want to discuss fundamental questions of future in seven workshops on Saturday: from Ecology to social policy and digitisation to ideas for a diverse society, spectrum is sufficient. Almost as many people have signed up for it as at a party congress. Unlike on such occasions, however, all interested parties may participate, a party membership is not a requirement.

    No Green self-assurance

In order to ensure green self-assurance, it does not go, stresses Habeck. Rar, event is prelude to a process at end of which – on party's 40 birthday in year 2020 – a new policy programme is to be put in. The so far valid dates from year 2002 and thus from a time when Greens still ruled in confederation, agenda 2010 was not yet adopted, and right-wing populism in Germany and elsewhere is still far less developed than today.

"We live in stark political times," says Habeck. That is why it is now time to examine extent to which old answers still bear and correspond to political and technical development. For example, issue of genetic engineering shows that conflict can become rich. Until now Greens were clear: "No, thank you" to genetic engineering was just as firm as vormaleinst No to nuclear power.

In a decision by Federal Executive Board for Convention, however, a new openness can be seen. It should be revisited wher "certain new technologies could not help to guarantee supply of foodstuffs where climate change provides for ever less rain or salted soil", says re with a view to furr development of Genetic engineering.

    The dispute is already re

However, green agricultural experts reacted with immediate rejection. "As far as means of solving world food and climate crises are concerned, all experiences show that it does not need genetic engineering", for example, Green Bundestag MEP Harald Ebner countered. Habeck doesn't bor you. He says that dispute is already going on before programme process has even begun. After all, that is what it is all about: discussing and weighing – with open output.

It could also be controversial in subject of digitisation. According to his decision, federal Executive Board sees this as an opportunity, without which, for example, energy turnaround could not be achieved. As a classical data protection party, however, Greens will also have to deal with different objectives in this field.

For example, question of how social security could look in age of digitisation is still largely open. is a basic income right way? This question is even controversial between two party leaders, who are orwise so demonstratively present as a good-humoured team. The Greens, however, also want to avoid a problem that has caused m many problems in past: demand for a lower consumption of meat. However, word Veggieday does not appear in decision of Board of Management.
