The Prime Minister of Romania, Mihai Tudose, lays down his office. For months, there has been a power struggle in his party, lies and accusations of corruption.

Mihai Tudose: Romanian Prime Minister steps back

The Romanian Prime Minister Mihai Tudose gives up his post after not even seven months. He receded due to lack of restraint in his party, sagteTudose after a board meeting of Romanian Social Democrats (PSD). His party had previously deprived him of his trust.

The Social Democrats have had a power struggle for months. Tudose accuses party chairman Liviu Dragnea of having promoted many incompetent party friends to high offices. Last week, prime minister also accused DerInnenministerin Carmen Dan of lying. He had asked her to resign, but she had refused.

In October, three cabinet members had already left government on pressure from Tudose. Two of m were suspected of corruption. Tudose had previously threatened to resign if ministers did not resign, and thus opposed party chief Liviu Dragnea.

Allegations of corruption against party chairman Dragnea

There are also accusations of corruption against party chief Dragnea, against him being determined, among or things, for suspicion of misappropriation of EU funds. The Romanian corruption also accuses him of abusing office and documenting it. Dragnea has already been convicted of electoral manipulation and was 2016 to two years in prison for probation. He was refore unable to take over position of head of government after election victory of his party in December 2016. However, it continues to be considered powerful.

The Romanian Government is currently planning a judicial reform that would loosen DasKorruptionsstrafrecht and limit competencies of corruption (DNA). Critics accuse government of jeopardizing independence of judiciary. Thousands of people went to streets.
