Refugees: Tens of thousands of people are striving for family reunification

About 70,000 Syrians and Iraqis are currently striving to relocate ir relatives who live in Germany as recognised refugees. An appropriate number of appointment requests are at German foreign representations in Beirut, Amman, Erbil, Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, reports news agency DPA, citing Foreign Office.

From beginning of 2015 to middle of 2017, 102,000 visas were already granted to family reunification for Syrians and Iraqis. The ministry estimates that up to 2018 approximately 100,000 to 200,000 more visas could be added.

The foreign 230,000 of such applications was granted worldwide. This concerns people from all kinds of countries beyond EU and only partially refugees. However, Syrians are by far largest group among recognised beneficiaries of entitlement to family reunification. For 100,000 to 200,000 members of family of Syrians and Iraqis who, in addition to those who already have a visa, may be added to Foreign Office until 2018, Nationals of subsidiary protection are eligible to submit an application from 2018 Already be calculated. How many would make use of possibility, but do not let mselves be predicted, according to Foreign Office.

Asylum seekers who receive protection in Germany are allowed to catch up with spouses and minor children. Also recognised minor refugees can bring ir parents into country. For a certain group with a limited protection status, subsidiary protected, Grand coalition had limited family reunification in March 2016 and suspended it for two years: until March 2018. The union also wants to ban this group beyond this deadline for close family members to move to Germany. The Greens – with FDP of possible partners of CDU and CSU in a Jamaica Coalition – reject this.

"Absolutely manageable number"

The domestic political spokesperson of Left Party, Ulla Jelpke, criticized plans of CDU and CSU: "A furr suspension of family's reunion to subsidiary protection would not only be cruel and inhumane, it would also be unconstitutional and thus an attack on Democracy. " The CDU and CSU should finally stop declaring "refugees biggest problem of this country". The left-wing politician demanded no furr restricting family reunification. Jelpke had also asked federal government for details on magnitude of reunification.

Looking at 70,000 Syrians and Iraqis and furr estimation of federal government, she said: "This is an absolutely manageable and undoubtedly controllable figure, even if reunification to subsidiary beneficiaries should be possible again next year." It's about human right to family life.

The family reunification had played a major role in past years and also in Bundestag election campaign. On a regular basis re are figures and estimates that supposedly many hundreds of thousands – or even millions, as AfD last spread – could also come into country via family reunification. Jelpke called such numbers "grotesque" and "pure agitation, without any reference to reality".
