SPD party chair: Scholz rejects primary of party leadership

SPD vice-Scholz advocates a renewal of the SPD. But debates about posts are the wrong way. The election of the party leader at the party Congress proved to be a success.

SPD party chair: Scholz rejects primary of party leadership

SPD vice-President Olaf Scholz, on or hand, has decided to appoint party chairman in future by means of a primary. "We have a good and tried-and-tested procedure, and that is that Chairman of party will be appointed," said Hamburg head of government in ARD broadcast report from Berlin. Previously, party Linke had demanded that all members be voted on party leadership in future.

"We urgently need renewal of SPD," said Scholz. For this reason, his party has made "a very careful discussion" for this year. The question, however, is not how presidents are elected, but "how we set ourselves up so that as a social democratic party we can reach over 30 percent of votes in Bundestag elections, that we can put Chancellor or Chancellor".

Scholz furr said that SPD chief Martin Schulz had combined his renunciation of foreign minister's post with desire to highlight agreements reached in coalition negotiations, instead of leading personnel discussions. "And that is exactly what we should want." Scholz did not want to confirm media reports that SPD Bundestag group chairman Andrea Nahles could already be appointed as Commissioner for party on Tuesday. First, party bodies would have to discuss it, he said.

Martin Schulz had announced last Wednesday to resign his office and to give party presidency to Nahles. That had provoked fierce criticism in party. Representatives of party left accused party leadership of determining posts only in a small circle.

Olaf Scholz, who is traded as a possible new federal finance minister, once again praised negotiated coalition agreement with CDU and CSU and promoted approval of critical party members as well. In order to contain temporary jobs, he prophesied that number of non-restrictive deadlines would "certainly be more than halved". Scholz referred to his expertise as a former lawyer.

According to German editorial network, experts from Institute for Labour Market and professional research (IAB) expect that number of fixed-term employment contracts can be reduced by about 400,000 without any real reason. At present, re is refore a total of around 830,000 non-fixed-term employment contracts with companies with more than 75 employees. In companies from this size, a maximum of 2.5 percent of workforce will be employed for a limited period of no reason – as Union and SPD coalition agreement provides.
