Open to athletes of all levels, the Montreal Athletics Classic, which will be presented this Sunday at the Claude-Robillard complex in the north of the city, will welcome, among others, athletes from the open, Elite and Premium streams.
This meeting is geared towards high-level performance. The Classic will be the fourth on the Athletics Canada National Circuit schedule and will support Canadian athletes seeking qualification for Canadian Championships or World Championships.
It promises
Athletics enthusiasts will be amazed. Among others on the 100 m with three runners who negotiated times under the bar of 10.17 s. They are Canadian Bolade Ajomale, American IIlias Garcia and Usheoritse Itsekiri of Nigeria, semi-finalist at the Tokyo Olympics.
In women's pole vault, the competition will be enhanced by the participation of Canadian record holder Alysha Newman, who posted a performance of 4.81m in 2019.
In the women's 100m-200m, three-time Olympian and Canadian 200m record Crystal Emmanuel will surely attract attention.
For middle-distance enthusiasts, Quebecer Thomas Fafard, still progressing with 13 min 37 s in the 5000 m, will be at the start of the 1500 m in a raised peloton where the needle could stop 3 min 38 s.
The competition provides an excellent opportunity for Quebec and Canadian athletes to qualify for the Canadian Championships to be held June 22-26 in Langley, British Columbia.
In addition, the organization will set up the optimal conditions for athletes seeking a standard for the World Athletics World Championships which will take place in Eugene, Oregon, from July 19 to 25.
Support for Ukraine
For the first time in its history, the Montreal Athletics Classic is selling tickets to attend the events at a cost of $20. In these difficult times for the Ukrainian people, the Classic will donate 50% of its box office receipts to the cause of support for Ukraine by the Congress of Ukrainian Canadians through the Sainte-Sophie Orthodox Church in Montreal.
