Three fires broke out in the space of just a few hours Monday afternoon in the Saint-Hyacinthe region, one of which would have killed more than 1,000 pigs.

Late Monday afternoon, dozens of local firefighters were fighting a violent fire that was ravaging a pigsty located on Route 235 in Saint-Hyacinthe.

According to employees, nearly 1,200 animals were burned alive during the disaster, the cause of which remains unknown.

At the height of the fire, a huge plume of black, opaque smoke was visible for tens of kilometers around.

Earlier in the afternoon, firefighters from Saint-Pie, a neighboring municipality of Saint-Hyacinthe, had to fight two almost simultaneous fires.

The first took place on row Double and the other on rue Saint-Pierre.

Apart from the animal losses, there would be no human casualties during these three events.
