Both men join an organization that fired head coach Barry Trotz last May to replace him with Lane Lambert a week later. Then, general manager Lou Lamoriello fired assistants Jim Hiller and John Gruden.

Houda is a household name to hockey fans who watched games during the 1980s and 1990s. From 1985 to 2003, he had 19 goals and 63 assists for 82 points in 561 games with six National League organizations. , including the Islanders.

As a coach, he worked for the Detroit Red Wings as an assistant during the last six seasons. Previously, he held identical duties with the Boston Bruins for 11 seasons, winning the Stanley Cup under Claude Julien in the spring of 2011.
