The market of the scooter electrical booming

scooters, electric have not yet finished to be talked about. In 2018, they have formed a real phenomenon, as it gradually became the vehicle must micro-mobility, these new modes of urban transport, such as scooters, but also the segways and other hoverboards. According to a study published on Monday by the Federation of the professionals of the sector (FP2M), almost 233.000 of these devices were sold last year, an increase of +129% compared to 2017. This market is not far from € 111 million). Scooters, electric come to gradually replace scooters, mechanical, always the most sold, with about a million units passed last year, but sell less (-20% compared to 2017).

"there's a real shift on the electric, and on the urban mobility that takes precedence over the mobility recreation", explained to the AFP Jean Ambert, the general manager of Smart Mobility Lab. The study reveals in fact a real explosion of the market for "new electric vehicles individual", which still accounted for 9% of volumes in 2016 and 23% in 2017, and switched to 35% last year. And their share of the value is same of 61%.

"The micro-mobility responds to the deep needs of the mobility-lightweight, agile, and intermodal."

How to explain such a passion? If these vehicles appeal to many, it is because their average price decline, explains the FP2M. For example, the average price of a scooter, electric is increased from 767 euros in 2016 to 477 euros in 2018. "The micro-mobility is input in the daily lives of the French," enthuses Jean Ambert, of the agency of forward-looking Smart Mobility Lab. "It responds to the deep needs of the mobility-lightweight, agile and intermodal". For him, the massive influx of operators of scooters, in self-service is not a competitive market. Quite the contrary, they allow "multiple users to test this new way of moving before you make the choice of buying". Always according to this study, the rise of the electric does a lot of good to the market of micro-mobility. It has, therefore, reached € 278 million last year, including accessories ; compared with 134 million euros in 2016.

Changing practices

More generally, this study is also a true failover of the practices of travel in the city. With the rise of the electric, the gear shift personnel (EDP) are increasingly becoming a means of urban mobility and are less used for recreation. "There is a need of punctuality that is not made possible by public transport or by cars, but that is made possible by this type of gears that are very handy and very mobile", analysis Jean Ambert. This expansion of the services of scooters by the free service would discourage besides not sales, since it allows users to test the concept before buying, he says.

For Fabrizio Furlan, the president of the FP2M, "if the phenomenon of the micro-urban mobility has been a resurgence of security issues, the new regulations are going in the right direction". In the framework of the law of Orientation on the mobility (LOM), "the creation of a specific category in the Code of the road is a first major step for the profession that allows you to register today for the EDP as an integral part of urban mobility," stresses Jocelyn Loumeto, managing director of FP2M.
