Aldi closes 2022 with 394 supermarkets and 11% more retail space

MADRID, 22 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Aldi closes its expansion plan this year with a total of 394 supermarkets in Spain and around 440,000 square meters of commercial area, 11% more than in 2021, as reported by the company, which has opened more than 40 new stores this year in Spanish territory.

This year, the growth of the supermarket chain in Spain has been marked, especially, by its arrival in the Canary Islands for the first time. In fact, the Canary Islands region has seen the highest number of Aldi openings this year, with a total of nine stores since the first openings in July.

The rest of the bulk of openings has been concentrated mainly in Andalusia, the Community of Madrid, Catalonia and the Valencian Community. Aldi has also opened new stores in other regions of the country, such as Aragon, Murcia, Navarra or the Basque Country.

In order to continue getting closer to its more than six million customers in Spain, the company has strengthened its commitment to the northern regions of the country this year. In this sense, the expansion plan also highlights the inauguration of the first Aldi supermarket in Asturias, which opened its doors last November in Gijón.

With this new store, Aldi is already present in all the autonomous communities of northern Spain. The supermarket chain has also announced that next year it will open its first store in the autonomous city of Melilla.

"Aldi has been working resolutely for years in Spain to make shopping as easy as possible for everyone and everywhere, and thus maintains the objective of increasing its presence in a continuous and sustained manner in the Spanish territory during 2023", has highlighted.

To support its rate of expansion, the company has reinforced its logistics capacity during 2022, with the expansion of the logistics center in Dos Hermanas (Seville) and the start-up of a new platform in the Canary Islands (in the industrial estate of Arinaga, in the Canarian municipality of Agüimes).

Aldi is also working on the construction of a new warehouse of more than 30,000 square meters in Sagunto (Valencia) and another of more than 40,000 square meters in Miranda de Ebro (Burgos), with the aim of supporting the supply of its stores in the zone of the Mediterranean arc and in the North of the country.

The supermarket chain currently has more than 170,000 square meters of logistics area, which represents an increase of 45% compared to 2020. Specifically, and over the last two years, Aldi has practically doubled its logistics area in Spain, adding more than 53,000 square meters thanks to extensions and new logistics centers.
