Alleged intruder whose hand was severed is identfied

Authorities have charged the man whose hand was severed late Saturday night in a home invasion, Northampton police report.

William F. Andrews Jr., 54, of Whitehall Township, who is still under hospital care in Philadelphia, is allegedly one of two people to enter the basement of 1337 Canal St. where Troy Imbody lived. The men -- a third remained outside -- allegedly wanted to intimate the 28-year-old, his father, Robert, said.

Police Chief Ronald Morey said the investigation currently points to three men being involved, but the other two are not in custody.

Troy Imbody was beaten and shot in the head and chest with a BB gun, Robert Imbody said.

But he fought off the alleged attackers, cutting off Andrews' hand with a machete, Robert Imbody said.

Andrews was dumped at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg about 25 minutes after the 11:20 p.m. burglary, police said.

Andrews is charged with burglary, criminal trespass, aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person, Morey said in a news release.

Andrews is not in custody but hospital officials are aware on the situation, Morey said.

The chief didn't immediately have an update on Andrews' condition and couldn't confirm if the hand was reattached.
