Almost 400 million passengers used public transport in September, 23.1% more than the previous year

More than 394.2 million passengers used public transport in Spain last September, 23.1% more than in the same month of 2021, according to provisional data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) made public this Friday which show that on average so far this year growth stands at 32.6%.

Urban transport increased by 21.5% in the annual rate, exceeding 235.7 million, and interurban transport by 28.1% (117.8 million). Within intercity, the 33.9% increase in rail transport stands out (52.3 million).

By type of transport, transport by rail in Spain grew by almost 34% (highlighting the 70.2% increase in medium distance), by bus and by sea the increase was 23.8%, in both cases, and air transport grew by 23.5%.

According to INE data, the rate of change in the number of public transport passengers in September compared to August is 44.5%. This increase is lower than the same comparison of last year (48.3%), although higher than that of previous years (40.3% in 2020, 36.9% in 2019 and 34.6% in 2018).

URBAN TRANSPORT GROWTH

Urban transport was used in September by more than 235.7 million passengers, 21.5% more than in the same month of 2021, according to INE data.

Transport by metro increased by 25.5% in the annual rate. By cities, the Palma metro was the one that presented the greatest increase, of 86%, and the Bilbao metro the smallest, of 13.2%.

Among the cities that have a metro, the highest increase in bus transport was recorded in Palma (34.3%), and the lowest in Bilbao (8.9%).

For its part, urban transport by bus increased by 18.9% in September compared to the same month of 2021. All the autonomous communities presented positive annual rates in transport by bus.

The greatest increases occurred in Castilla - La Mancha (30%), Region of Murcia (24.1%) and Community of Madrid (23.9%). For their part, Aragon (8%), the Basque Country (11.4%) and the Canary Islands (11.9%) recorded the smallest increases in bus transport.

THE LONG DISTANCE BUS IS FIRED

Data from the statistical institute also show that more than 117.8 million passengers used intercity transport in September, which represents an increase of 28.1% compared to the same month in 2021.

By type of transport, rail grew by 33.9%, bus and sea by 23.8%, in both cases, and air by 23.5%.

Cercanías rose 20.2% in bus transport and 31.8% in rail transport. For its part, medium distance grew by 30.6% in bus transport and 70.2% in rail transport.

Finally, long distance increased by 75.1% in bus transport and 33.6% in rail. Within the latter, Alta Velocidad grew last September by 37.8%.

SPECIAL AND DISCRETIONARY TRANSPORTATION

More than 40.5 million users used special and discretionary transport in September, which represents an increase of 18.5% in the annual rate.

The number of special transport passengers rose by 0.2% and exceeded 26 million users. Within this, the school fell by 3.6%, and the work increased by 11.5%.

For its part, discretionary transport grew by 76.7% compared to the same month in 2021, with more than 14.5 million passengers.
