The City of Montreal and the Société du parc Jean-Drapeau (SPJD) are announcing the start of the revitalization work on the Parc des Jeux in the park, which will last until March 2023, in their first phase.

A budget of 10.5 million will be allocated to the project. The purpose of the work is to restore the picnic shelter and the plain chalet.

The work of the first phase aims to restore the picnic shelter and the chalet on the plain.

“Emphasis will be placed on showcasing the façade of the Chalet de la Plaine, which is clad in breccia stone quarried on the island itself, with the aim of highlighting the strong link that exists between the Plaine des Games, the St. Lawrence River and Montreal”, is it indicated in the press release from the City.

The ground floor and the west facade will be refurbished so that the chalet can be accessible to the general public.

This phase of work should begin soon, to end in March 2023. A second phase of construction, which will aim to “restoring the landscape” is planned between April 2023 and September 2024.

The site in question is listed in the Répertoire du patrimoine culturel du Québec, in particular because of its history and the first military occupations of the island.

“I am very happy and proud to see that these heritage gems will come back to life and welcome visitors to Parc Jean-Drapeau. This will be an opportunity for our citizens to discover these buildings, which are part of the history of the Île Sainte-Hélène park,” said Caroline Bourgeois, responsible for large parks on the City’s executive committee.
