An association calls for better regulation of Airbnb accommodations

A few months before the provincial elections, the Corporation of Real Estate Owners of Quebec (CORPIQ) called on the parties to review the legislative framework for the rental of Airbnb accommodation, at a time when many households are having difficulty finding accommodation.

Nearly 4.8% of CORPIQ members surveyed indicated that they had been confronted with a situation where tenants illegally sublet their residence on Airbnb.

A minimum of 13,000 dwellings in Quebec would thus be part of an illegal sublease by a tenant, according to the corporation.

“Rental property owners are still striving to provide shelter to 1.3 million households with kindness in a context of scarcity in several regions.

They maintain it, but see the vocation of their accommodation being diverted by tenants who want to monetize the space illegally for tourist purposes, ”said CORPIQ in a press release on Thursday.

“The legislator must strengthen his law and better protect owners and the rental stock in Quebec. This phenomenon is the tip of the iceberg,” explained Mr. Marc-André Plante, Director, Public Affairs and Government Relations at CORPIQ.

In particular, he suggests granting more fines to offenders and better monitoring the marketing of housing by tenants.
