Assault on a Ukrainian refugee: three arrests in Winnipeg

Two men and a teenage boy were charged Friday by the Winnipeg Police Service with assault and assault with a weapon in connection with the violent assault on a Ukrainian refugee on Canada Day.

The main victim of this incident, a Ukrainian refugee, came to Canada to escape the horrors of war, only to be stabbed in the neck after an altercation. Along with his friend, the man was confronted with three individuals during Canada Day celebrations.

The stabbed man's friend, also a Ukrainian refugee, was sprayed with pepper spray.

The man still had the knife stuck in his neck when a couple came to his aid, Global News reported.

“This man has been here for two weeks – he has no enemies, he is not in a gang. It could have been anyone. It could have been me,” said Jorge Torres, member of the couple who intervened first.

Two of the men arrested are 19 years old, while the last member of the trio is 15 years old.
