The bicyclist, Joseph Harvie, 36, of Monroe Township was heading south on Mercer Street around Airport Road around noon Saturday when the crash occurred, according to a statement from East Windsor Police. Harvie was turning left onto Airport Road when a car, also driving southbound on Mercer Street, crashed into his bike.

Harvie was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Saturday afternoon but died from his injuries a short time later, police said. The driver of the car, 64-year-old Jake Hopfinger, of Hightstown, was not hurt.

Harvie was an avid cyclist, according to his Facebook page. In one post from several years ago, he asked people to support his ride as he cycled 100 miles to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

"I started riding because my cousin was diagnosed 15 years ago and I made a promise to her that I would keep pedaling until there is a cure," he wrote.

According to his Linkedin page, Harvie worked for Monroe Township as the Public Information Officer. Prior to that he worked for the Princeton Packet for over three years.

Police are investigating the crash and had not filed any charges as of Saturday evening.
