The Cleveland Browns could soon trade quarterback Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers.

According to the CBS network, the two NFL teams have intensified their negotiations recently and they only have the portion of the salary to be assumed by each team.

In 2022, Mayfield must play the last year of his rookie contract and get his hands on more than $18 million.

The Browns no longer need the services of the first pick in the 2018 draft, having acquired Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans this offseason. The Ohio club also agreed to a five-year, $230 million contract extension for the newcomer.

In 14 games last year, Mayfield completed 60.5% of his attempted passes for 3,010 yards and 17 touchdowns. This is his worst season statistically since playing in the NFL.

For their part, the Panthers currently rely on the services of Sam Darnold as a starting quarterback. In 2021, his first year in the Carolina club uniform, the redhead was limited to 12 games due to injury. He completed 59.9% of his stints for 2,527 yards and nine majors. The third overall pick of the 2018 auction was also the victim of 13 interceptions.
