Spain has registered a total of 4,379 bankruptcy proceedings in the first eight months of 2023, 6% more than in the same period last year, and 19,855 dissolutions, 4% less, according to data on bankruptcy proceedings extracted by Informa D

According to the report published this Tuesday, 90% of the bankruptcy proceedings initiated these months correspond to bankruptcies (3,956), while restructuring plans reach 234 and 189 special procedures for micro-enterprises have been registered.

According to the study, the accumulated number of bankruptcy proceedings alone decreases by 4% compared to the same period last year, while if all bankruptcy procedures are taken into account the figure would be 6% above last year.

Looking only at the month of August, the number of contests was significantly reduced compared to July, by 78%, remaining at 141. This month, 9 restructuring plans were registered, 69% less than in the previous month, being the highest figure. low of the year, and 23 special procedures for microenterprises, 66% below.

On his side, the dissolutions this month fell 8% from a year ago, 7% compared to the previous month, to remain at 1,640, also the lowest figure this year.

It is the smaller companies, the micro-businesses that represent the majority of the contests initiated in August, 82%, the small ones account for about 16%, the medium-sized ones exceed 1% and only one large company has initiated a contest this month . Regarding the restructuring plans, microenterprises account for 44% of the total, small companies account for 22%, medium-sized companies account for 33% and no large companies appear.

Catalonia is the community with the highest number of bankruptcies and restructuring processes so far this year, with 1,194 and 68 in each case. They are followed by the Valencian Community in bankruptcies, with 610, and Madrid in the case of restructuring plans, with 37. Between the three, they account for 60% of all bankruptcies recorded since January.

On its side, Madrid is the autonomy that has registered the most special procedures so far this year, 60, above the 42 of Catalonia, adding together more than half of the total.

In the case of dissolutions, Madrid concentrates 29% of the accumulated total, 5,755. The next is Andalusia, with 2,784, and after it the Valencian Community with 2,282. Despite being the one with the highest number, Madrid registered the highest decrease in absolute value, subtracting 335 compared to last year.
