Bridgegate trial: Key government witness David Wildstein back on the stand today

The prosecution’s star witness will resume his testimony on Monday at the federal trial of two former allies of Governor Christie accused of creating gridlock in Fort Lee to punish the town’s Democratic mayor for not supporting Christie’s 2013 re-election bid.

David Wildstein, 55, testified last week that Christie, a Republican, and his top aides used assets and facilities of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey like a “goody bag” to court the endorsement of Democratic politicians.

Wildstein pleaded guilty last year to conspiring to create traffic jams in Fort Lee by closing two of three access lanes to the George Washington Bridge during the rush hour over five mornings in September 2013.

At the time, Wildstein was the director of interstate capital projects at the Port Authority, which owns and operates the bridge.

His former boss, Bill Baroni, 44, and Bridget Anne Kelly, 44, the governor’s former deputy chief of staff, each face nine counts of conspiracy, misusing agency property, wire fraud and violating the civil rights of Fort Lee residents to travel freely.

The trial, now in its second week, is expected to run until the end of October.
