“At present, only one correctional officer from the Montreal Detention Establishment [Bordeaux prison] has been temporarily relieved of his duties. However, considering that the analysis of the situation is still in progress, other staff members may be targeted by administrative measures,” said Marie-Josée Montminy, spokesperson for the MSP, in an email.

The circumstances explaining the suspension of the correctional officer and his identity have not been disclosed.

In addition to investigations by the Sureté du Québec and the Coroner's Office, the MSP said that it will conduct its own administrative investigation through the Directorate of Internal Audit, Investigations and Inspection (DAIEI), an integrated body at the ministry.

A "careful analysis" of the Directorate General for Security, another office of the MSP, will also take place, said Ms. Montminy.

Nicous D'Andre Spring was seriously injured during an intervention by correctional officers on December 24. He died of his injuries in hospital on Christmas Day.

The victim, detained in the prison, was charged in particular with assault on a peace officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and criminal harassment.

Mr. Spring was being held pending trial.
