According to what the police investigation has established, Fritznel Richard is likely to have died of hypothermia during his attempt to access American soil.

His body bore no marks of violence, confirmed the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) on Friday.

A coroner's inquest will take place to try to establish the circumstances of the death.

"Mr. Richard is the man who was wanted by the Sûreté du Québec during the holiday season, between December 27 and 29. The research ended on December 29 when the information held indicated that Mr. Richard would have entered the United States, ”said Sergeant Louis-Philippe Ruel, spokesperson for the SQ.

Fritznel Richard was found unresponsive on Wednesday afternoon, shortly before 3 p.m., near Roxham Road.

The Roxham Road is by far the route most favored by smugglers and migrants seeking refuge in Canada. In fact, 97% of irregular entries into the country take place through this small 8 kilometer corridor.

Last month, the federal government predicted a record 50,000 asylum seekers intercepted at Roxham Road in 2023.
