Floods: 34 municipalities could be compensated

The Quebec government announced Thursday that 34 municipalities and their residents could be compensated after flooding caused by rain between April 4 and May 24.

The Ministère de la Sécurité publique specifies that applicants for compensation must meet the eligibility criteria of the General Compensation and Financial Assistance Program in the event of actual or imminent disasters.

This program constitutes last-resort assistance to repair eligible damage to principal residences, businesses and municipal infrastructure, according to the Ministère de la Sécurité publique.

On the other hand, a municipality is excluded from the program if it has not adopted a civil protection plan, as provided for in a regulation on disasters which sets out the emergency means for the protection of people and property.

"We are constantly working to ensure that our municipalities and our citizens feel protected and supported, regardless of the disaster they face," said Public Security Minister Geneviève Guilbault in a press release.
