Grandfather scammed into buying $2K in iTunes gift cards

The victim thought his grandson was calling and needed money.

But Pennsylvania State Police say the person on the other end of the phone was a thief pretending to be the grandson.

State police on Wednesday morning reported the victim, a 64-year-old Lower Macungie Township resident, was targeted by the thief in two calls between 9 a.m. April 26 and 10:20 a.m. April 27.

The "grandson" told the man he needed help because he was involved in a crash and requested the money in the form of iTunes gift cards. The grandfather bought $1,000 worth of the girt cards and relayed the verification number over the phone.

The "grandson" called again the next day and asked for another $1,000 in iTunes gift cards. The grandfather again bought them and relayed the verification numbers over the phone.

Fake lawyer requests iTunes gift cards

"After approximately a week had passed and the victim spoke to his (real) grandson, the victim realized he was scammed" and called police, according to a news release.

State police are investigating. Similar scams have been reported recently in the Lehigh Valley.
