A volcanic eruption emanating from a fissure began near Reykjavik on Wednesday, the Meteorological Institute of Iceland said.

The fissure, from which lava could be seen erupting in local media footage, is located some 40 kilometers from Reykjavik, near the site of Mount Fagradalsfjall, where a volcano erupted in 2021.

“The eruption started near Fagradalsfjall. The exact location is yet to be confirmed,” the institute said on Twitter.
