Increase in firearm discharges in Laval as well

It is not just Montreal that is affected by the problem of armed violence. In its annual report, filed Wednesday, the Laval Police Service (SPL) also confirms an increase in firearm discharges on its territory.

“Compared to 2019, the years 2020 and 2021 have seen an increase in the number of real firearm discharge events on Laval territory. In 2021, they mainly occurred in public places, and mostly in the Chomedey district”, it is noted in the highlights of the report.

However, the SPL did not quantify the problem, unlike the SPVM which had filed its own annual report on Tuesday. The SPL, however, says it seized 41 firearms in 2021.

The report nevertheless indicates that crimes against the person increased by 25% in 2021, compared to the previous year, to reach a “peak”.

“Our desire to ensure the safety of all Laval residents has been expressed in the face of the increase in crimes related to firearms, a phenomenon facing the entire metropolitan region. The SPL quickly deployed several measures, both through an increased police presence in the affected sectors, and through targeted investigative actions,” said the SPL.

Another province-wide trend, the number of victims of domestic violence increased by 11% in 2021 in Laval, to reach another “peak”. This, while in 2020, the SPL recorded the lowest number of reported cases in five years.

“From 2020 to 2021, sexual offences, cases of criminal harassment and uttering threats are particularly experiencing increases and peaks in the context of domestic violence”, it is written.
