Lumber industry: a new labor contract ratified by Unifor

Members of eight Resolute sawmills represented by Unifor have ratified by 67% the tentative agreement reached last week for the renewal of the model employment contract in Quebec sawmills.

"Even if it is a good employment contract, our members had enormous expectations because of the high profitability of the sawmill sector at the moment," commented Friday in a press release Renaud Gagné, former Quebec director who acted as as negotiator and spokesperson in the round of negotiations.

This new four-year contract will therefore serve as a model for the entire sawmill industry in the province.

The collective agreement provides for salary adjustments, salary increases, but also bonuses. A women's representative will also be appointed in each plant.

"In the context of the labor shortage, the employer includes the union in a joint committee whose mission will be to ensure better integration of members of groups seeking equity, including women, workers and foreign workers, workers with disabilities, the LGBT community, etc., “he also clarified.
