Major challenges to provide access to abortion in the regions

Since the overthrow of Roe V. Wade, Canada has boasted of protecting women's right to abortion, but depending on where they live, they don't have the same access.

Throughout the territory of Bas-St-Laurent and Gaspésie, only the cities of Rivière-du-Loup, Rimouski and Gaspé offer these services.

“The right does not equal access and it is important to remember that there are provinces like New Brunswick where access is more difficult,” said the co-founder of Les Passeuses, Mélina Castonguay.

Distance and transport are at the heart of women's main concerns. To counter this problem, several activists are moving forward with hopeful initiatives.

“Here in Gaspésie, only in Gaspé is surgical abortion performed, so for women who come from a little further away, they have additional logistics such as travel expenses and taking the day off at work", underlines the agent of the Table of consultation of the women of Gaspésie-îles-de-la-Madelaine, Léa Blouin.
