Mercedes-Benz partners with Norwegian aluminum producer Hydro to reduce its carbon footprint

MADRID, 16 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz has signed an agreement with the Norwegian aluminum producer Hydro for the supply of this raw material but with a reduced carbon footprint, an alliance through which the automobile company advances in its objective of achieving neutrality environment in its operations, as reported in a statement.

"As an immediate result of this partnership, the CO2 (carbon dioxide) footprint of aluminum supplied by Hydro will be almost 70% lower than the European average by next year," Mercedes-Benz said.

In this sense, Hydro already supplies aluminum with a low CO2 footprint to the German manufacturer, specifically, for its plant in Stuttgart. However, through the new agreement "cooperation is raised to a new level" to optimize the decarbonization processes of the aluminum used in the manufacture of vehicles.

"Aluminum is becoming more and more important as a lightweight material in electric vehicles. We are working intensively with our partners to reduce CO2 emissions in the aluminum supply chain", has valued the member of the board of management of Mercedes-Benz and Head of Technology, Development and Acquisitions, Markus Schäfer.

For her part, Hydro President and CEO Hilde Merete Aasheim stressed that the German manufacturer's ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2039 coincides with Hydro's goal of offering carbon-free aluminum on an industrial scale by 2030. .

"Partnerships and collaboration across value chains can accelerate the technological developments needed to reduce emissions, and we are excited to have Mercedes join us on our path to zero-carbon aluminium."
