Meta announces the arrival of the 2Africa submarine cable in Barcelona

The connection will unite Africa, Europe and Asia

BARCELONA, 24 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Meta, as part of the 2Africa consortium, has announced the arrival of the 2Africa submarine cable at the Barcelona Cable Landing Station (CLS) in Sant Adrià de Besòs (Barcelona), with which the station is launched.

In a statement this Monday, Meta explained that the consortium has partnered with AFR-IX (based in Barcelona) to carry out the mooring of the cable in the city of Barcelona.

The deployment will serve companies and service providers located in Spain to be able to access international connectivity from the company's facilities with direct connection to the cable landing station.

The general director of AFR-IX telecom, Norman Abi, has highlighted that "the choice of this location is an example of the competitive advantages of Barcelona as a key landing point in the Mediterranean".

The director of Meta for Spain and Portugal, Irene Cano, added that 2Africa "will be the longest submarine cable ever deployed" --45,000 kilometers-- and will serve those communities that depend on the Internet for services such as education, health and business.

This deployment is one of many that will take place until the end of the project in 2024, when it will have been extended to a total of 46 locations.

The 2Africa submarine cable is designed to provide international connectivity to approximately 3 billion people, representing 36% of the world's population, connecting Africa, Europe and Asia.

On October 13, the Government inaugurated the facilities of the Barcelona Cable Landing Station (CLS), the first landing station for submarine fiber optic cables in Catalonia, and which is prepared to accommodate up to 8 cables.
